Garden Picket Fence

Picket fences, especially popular in the United States and in England, are among the most classic and appealing fences and they are particularly useful as garden fences.

One reason to have a garden picket fence is to protect the garden from trespassers, be they children playing in the garden or finding a shorter route through the garden; or perhaps four legged creatures are using the garden as a short cut and thus tramping it down or finding it a convenient place to relieve themselves. A second and very valid reason for a garden fence is to develop it as a decorative border which will showcase the garden, increase the value of the property and alert nearby neighbors to its boundaries.

There are a variety considerations before making any decisions about garden picket fencing.

The height of a garden picket fence will ultimately depend on its purpose. If privacy is an issue then the height of the garden picket fence will have to be taller than a garden fence designed to be solely decorative.

Garden picket fences, and particularly white picket fences, can be used as a backdrops to a garden. Planting a small garden with a single picket fence panel behind it will accent the garden and can also renovate it as the changing seasons bring out the many different colors and hues in the variety of plants growing in the garden

Picket garden fences can be constructed of various materials including wood, plastic, wrought iron and aluminum. Plastic garden fences are characteristically short with two parallel rails that fit into notches in the posts and because they cannot hold any type load they are used only as an ornamental feature or border.

Wooden garden fences are classic and bring a more natural look. Their prices are reasonable, however they require maintenance, and painting a wood picket garden fence can be a chore.

Wrought iron garden fences are often referred to as decorative or ornamental fences because of their attractive visual appeal. The disadvantage to wrought iron fencing is that it is susceptible to rust if not painted. Another good choice is aluminum fencing which comes in a variety of colors and is maintenance free.

It’s not hard to build a garden picket fence from scratch and it can be designed to match the individual home owner’s needs, likes and dislike. Kits for building garden picket fences are also available.
