Garden Fencing

Choosing a garden fence is a decision that should be based on what your needs are as far as fencing is concerned. Whether you want more privacy or need to keep neighborhood pets out of your garden, there are many styles of fencing to choose from.

For privacy one may wish to choose wooden fencing that will block in their garden nearly completely. Most privacy fencing comes in wooden panels that are approximately four feet wide and as high as eight or ten feet tall. These panels are assembled by attaching them to wooden posts that go into the ground and hold the panels in place. This can be done as a do-it-yourself project or by a fencing company. Depending on the size of your garden the costs can be medium to fairly high for this type of privacy fencing.

Another type of fencing that is more commonly used is chain link. This style comes in a variety of heights. It can be assembled using metal rods or poles to hold it in place, or by using wooden fence posts. If planning to install the fencing yourself it is important to know that you may need some assistance. Chain link fencing needs to be held very taut before connecting it to the fence posts, otherwise it may sag.

You may need at least one other person to help with the installation, although two would make the job easier. Chain link fencing doesn't necessarily provide much privacy unless you plan to plant thick hedges near it, but it is fairly good for keeping out unwanted animals. If there is an animal that digs under the fencing , you can always place a bit of barbed wire at the very bottom. This may deter most animals from digging underneath the fence to gain access to your garden.

A less expensive type of garden fencing if the type used for those that normally have farm animals. It is sometimes called wire fencing or hog wire fencing. This is made of metal that has squares in between. It can be purchased in rolls. You will need to measure the size of the area you wish to enclose in order to purchase the correct amount of wire fencing. It is available in many heights and gauges, from very thick, strong wire to very lightweight. The latter is normally used to place around poultry pens or flower and vegetable gardens. Installing it is much simpler then the other two types as you simply roll it off as you attach it to either metal or wooden posts.
